Mount Molloy Fish, Chips and Beer
When I opened my eyes and looked out of the bedroom window on Monday morning I suddenly realised I’ve been taking a great view for granted for the last 4 weeks, and that I won’t be seeing it for much longer. I’ve put a photo below.
I was making tea, so after deciding on chicken rogan josh I went into town to get the bits. On the Honda. In 28 degree heat, bright sunshine, good roads and little traffic. Believe me I was making the most of it!
After lunch I did a few small bits on the bike, including cleaning the clutch reservoir and topping up the fluid. Conor was working at Salsa later but we’ve a ride planned with a small group I’ve largely met after he finishes work tomorrow. Probably up the range to Julatten for a beer looking out over the rainforest.
Kerry and I took Murphy for a walk along the beach, and again I’ve included pictures as it was such a nice evening.
Tuesday morning was hot and sunny again, and I went into town to get the bits to make Cornish pasties for tea. As I parked up at the waterfront I realised the combined age of me and the Honda is 97, which seems like a good enough reason to post a picture of it!
I made the pastry so it could sit in the fridge until needed later, then had something to eat and prepped all the meat and veg.
After checking that Andrew and Robyn were in, I went round for a coffee, and Andrew confirmed he was good for the ride later.
As it was we had 5 bikes going up the hill – Me, Conor, Andrew, Gav, and Billy who owns Salsa restaurant where we’re going to eat on Friday to mark the end of my holiday. We had a beer at Julatten, looking out over the rainforest. Next week I’ll be having a cup of tea looking out at the rain! Andrew and I also agreed to check the weather on Wednesday morning, with a view to riding up to Mount Molloy for fish and chips.
We took Murphy for a walk later, after which a team effort got the pasties constructed, cooked and eaten. I’ve got everything in to make another batch to leave in the freezer before I go.
On Wednesday I woke to the sound of rain, but it soon stopped and I sat out in the sun having a brew. Checking the weather radar however, it seemed more rain was on the way for lunchtime, so I rang Andrew and we agreed to put off the ride today and recheck in the morning, rather than risk riding down the range in the rain.
But, while it was sunny I took the Honda into town and had a walk round the marina, before heading to an ice cream shop which I’ve been meaning to visit due to their attractive display and variety of flavours. I just had vanilla and mars bar, and it didn’t disappoint.
We didn’t see any rain in Port Douglas all day, although that’s not to say it didn’t happen up the range. Conor and I walked Murphy later, and shortly after Kerry came home we went over to Michelle’s for Wine Wednesday. Charles and Debs were there as well, and we sat outside until about 9.
Thursday morning the weather was looking good, so I rang Andrew. We subsequently met at the Shell station from where he, Robyn and I rode up the hill, past the Julatten pub and on to the Mount Molloy where I finally got my fish and chips, accompanied by a schooner of their own-brew Mount Molloy beer. It was as I remembered, and was well worth the 40 minute ride each way.
The Honda’s also now showing that I’ve ridden just over 1600 kilometres since getting here. That’s 1000 biking miles, in October, without the need for wet weather gear. Definitely a first for me!
Kerry and I did tea between us while Conor was at Salsa. We had the chicken and chickpea curry they did on my first night here, and it’s something I’ll be making when I get back.
I’ll do another post covering Friday and my last weekend, and at some point I’ll get round to posting some videos. In the meantime just a few photos from this week:
