Crocodiles, Kuranda and Fish & Chips at the Seaside
I woke up on Monday morning to the sun streaming through the window, and it stayed that way right up until the point I put my bike jacket on and stepped outside. Then the heavens opened, so I went back inside and had some breakfast.
While I was eating the rain stopped, and when I went out on the bike after about half an hour the roads were already starting to dry. I went into town for a few bits for tea, and picked up another present for home.
Later did a bit of minor work on the Honda, made some more clotted cream, went with Kerry to take Murphy for a walk in between rain showers, and did Thai green chicken curry for tea.
Tuesday morning started bright, so after breakfast I took a run up to Mossman as I wanted to visit the hardware store there. I was after a buffing pad to fit to the backing plate on Conor’s drill, the idea being I could then use it to buff out some light scratches on the Honda’s fairing. I found one, bought it, and later on used it to great effect by getting a polished finish where previously the paint had been marked.
In the afternoon I went down to the Mowbray bridge, but as the river was high I didn’t hold out much hope of seeing any crocodiles. As I was talking to a guy however, we saw a shadow just below the surface and as it got nearer realised it was a croc. We got our phones out, and the croc obliged by breaking the surface just as it approached us. Then it got shy and disappeared again, and despite waiting around for a while there was no further action.
It then rained overnight and early morning, but I set off on the Honda to go to Kuranda just after 9 and apart from a wet road at the top half of the Julatten range I had dry and mostly sunny weather all day. I rode to Mareeba then on to Kuranda where I stopped and did a bit more present shopping, then back via the Kuranda range and Ellis Beach where I stopped for a brew and some lunch. Altogether I did just short of 200km and the Honda was quick and faultless all day.
In the evening we went to Newby Beach where we got a takeaway – I had fish and chips – and we sat outside eating it at dusk overlooking the sea with Port Douglas in the distance.
And that leaves me with only 10 days remaining before I come home. A shop assistant I spoke to said it was a good time to be leaving as it’ll soon get very wet and very hot here. I pointed out that where I’m going will also be very wet, but with a noticeable lack of heat! Still, the humidity probably wouldn’t suit me here in the wet season, so I’ll be better going away and coming back another time.
There’s still 10 days to go though!
